Abstract

Habib Ja’far in Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast Close the Door entitled “Kaget Kalian Habib Ngomong Gini!! Azab Dan SDM Rendah!!”. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of illocutionary speech acts and analyze their communicative functions in the conversation. This study applied a qualitative research method using Searle’s (1976) theory of speech acts as the main theoretical framework. The data were collected through documentation techniques by watching, transcribing, and selecting Habib Ja’far’s utterances from the podcast video uploaded on Deddy Corbuzier’s YouTube channel. The findings reveal that four types of illocutionary speech acts were found in the podcast: assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives, while declarative speech acts were not found. A total of 19 data were analyzed, consisting of 9 assertive speech acts, 8 directive speech acts, 1 commissive speech act, and 1 expressive speech act, with assertive speech acts being the most dominant. This indicates that Habib Ja’far mainly functions as an informant and interpreter who delivers opinions, explanations, and moral perspectives. In terms of function, the most frequent functions identified are expressing personal opinions or viewpoints, providing advice or counsel, and expressing sympathy. The study concludes that Habib Ja’far uses speech acts strategically to educate, persuade, and encourage empathy among listeners, especially regarding humanitarian issues, while reflecting his role as a religious figure who combines moral values, social criticism, and compassion in digital communication. This research contributes to the development of pragmatic studies, particularly in analyzing speech acts in contemporary podcast discourse.
